Highlights
A cardio hike that ends / connects to the Crest trails from the northside of the Sandia Mts. Lots of tree cover, wild flowers and several historical features.
CautionsThis is a solid E hike with over 2600 feet of elevation gain. Bring water, snacks, hiking pole(s), etc.
Trailhead Directions
Take I25 to the Bernalillo Placitas exit. Turn West towards Placitas on Hwy 165, drive nine miles until the pavement ends just past the nine mile marker sign. Hwy 165 turns into a rough gravel road. Continue 0.7 miles to just past the second one-lane historic stone bridge. Park on the east side of the road in a wide spot. Cross the road to the west side, head up the hill about 90 feet and look for the trail marker on the right.
The gravel road is not well maintained, yet I’ve never seen the first mile or so difficult to drive. There are potholes, yet never deep mud.
Actual Hike
From the trail sign, the hike continues less than 0.5 mile in a northerly direction, roughly parallel to Hwy 165 and then after several switchbacks heads south-southwest direction for most of the hike up to the CREST (4.3 mi).
At about 3 miles look for a mining claim marker.
