Trailhead Directions

From Albuquerque take I-40 East to Tijeras exit, south on SR 337 to its end, right (west) on SR 55 to Tajique. Look for sign in Tajique for “4th of July Canyon.” Take FR 55 about 6.5 miles. At the 6.5 mile point the road will bend to the left. Just beyond the bend on the right side of the road there will be two large parking areas. Park here.

Actual Hike

From PARK (0.0 mi) take Albuquerque Trail north to TURN BACK (0.5 mi) and turn back, returning to TO 4JULY (0.9 mi). Turn right here and take the Albuquerque Trail Bypass west TO ABQ (1.7 mi). Turn left and go down the Fourth Of July Trail. Along this section of the hike there are many maples, which are very colorful in the fall. You will pass through the camping area to the intersection with FR55 (2.4 mi). Turn left and follow the forest road, which also is lined with maples, to parking.
